What a mahadasha is
A mahadasha is one driver’s whole turn — years long. Small turns (antardashas) happen inside it, like rest stops on the same stretch of road.
In the Vimshottari system, life is divided into nine planetary periods — mahadashas — totalling 120 years: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. Which period you are in right now is fixed by one number: the Moon’s exact sidereal position at your birth. This calculator computes that position with the Swiss Ephemeris, applies the Lahiri ayanamsha, and returns your running mahadasha with its start and end to the second — plus the antardasha and pratyantardasha inside it.
Why calculators disagree about your mahadasha
Different apps measure the sky slightly differently, so their dates drift. We publish our measuring rules so anyone can check ours.
Three conventions move mahadasha dates between apps: the ayanamsha (we use Lahiri, the Indian standard), the year length (365.2425 days here; 360-day years drift by months over a lifetime), and how the birth time is converted to UTC (historical time-zone records matter). Near a nakshatra boundary, those choices can even change which mahadasha you appear to be in — see what birth-time accuracy changes.

What your mahadasha does not decide
The driver’s mood colours the trip — it doesn’t promise where you’ll arrive. Nobody can promise that.
A mahadasha is a traditional lens, not a verdict: it cannot guarantee marriage, money, results or health, and any tool that says otherwise is overclaiming.
