Each of the nine drivers has a different mood — one likes building slowly, one likes making friends, one likes racing. Your current driver colours your days. Nobody can promise what happens; the mood is just the weather, not the destination.
First, the honest frame
A period doesn’t make things happen — it’s more like the season’s weather. Two people in the same Saturn season still live different days, because their charts are different.
A mahadasha does not make things happen. In the tradition, it foregrounds the significations of its lord — filtered through that planet’s sign, house, dignity and aspects in your birth chart. Two people in “the same” Saturn mahadasha are not living the same period, because their Saturns are not the same.

The nine periods
The nine moods, super short: Ketu — letting go and finishing old things. Venus — friends, love, comfy things. Sun — being seen and taking charge. Moon — feelings and home. Mars — energy and pushing. Rahu — a big hunger for more. Jupiter — growing and learning. Saturn — slow homework that pays off later. Mercury — talking, learning, trading.

- Ketu · 7 years
- Traditionally a turning-inward: loosened attachments, questions of meaning, unfinished threads resurfacing to be closed. Often read as a period that simplifies more than it accumulates.
- Venus · 20 years
- The longest period — relationships, comfort, aesthetics, agreements and the pleasures and entanglements of partnership. Its tone leans on Venus’s condition in your chart.
- Sun · 6 years
- Visibility, authority, responsibility, and the relationship with father-figures and institutions. Read as a period where being seen — and being accountable — comes forward.
- Moon · 10 years
- Emotional life, home, mother, the public, and the rhythms of care. Traditionally sensitive to the Moon’s dignity and to how supported it is natally.
- Mars · 7 years
- Drive, competition, engineering of outcomes, and friction. Effortful periods that reward channelled energy and punish scattered force, in the traditional reading.
- Rahu · 18 years
- Appetite and unconventional ambition — foreign elements, technology, sudden expansions and the risk of overreach. The tradition reads Rahu as amplifying whatever house it occupies.
- Jupiter · 16 years
- Growth, learning, mentors, children, and faith. Generally read as the most naturally supportive lord — moderated, as always, by its actual condition in the chart.
- Saturn · 19 years
- Structure, patience, labour, and the slow build. Traditionally the period of earned results: pruning first, consolidation after.
- Mercury · 17 years
- Communication, trade, skills, documents and networks. Read as a period favouring learning and exchange, coloured by Mercury’s placement.
The sub-period matters as much
Inside every big turn are nine small turns. Most ‘something changed!’ feelings are a small turn changing — and we compute those changes to the exact second.
the first antardasha always belongs to the mahadasha’s own lord
Within a mahadasha, the running antardasha (and beneath it the pratyantardasha) sets the nearer-term tone — a Saturn mahadasha with a Venus antardasha reads very differently from the same mahadasha under a Mars antardasha.
Most of what people feel as “the period changing” is an antardasha boundary, which is why we compute them to the second rather than the month. How the running stack meets the live sky is its own topic: dasha × transit.
